Description of the technology

  • Various indoor environments such as Data Centres, refrigerated warehouses, factories, buildings and so on rely on well-known cooling technologies including chilled-water systems, Air-cooled systems, water-cooled systems, Glycol-cooled systems, refrigerant-cooled systems and so on. Certain environment requires to be supplied at once in cold energy and power such as Data Centres.

  • The cryogenic energy system is a novel zero-emission polygeneration alternative to serve as a Cryo-genset (backup power solution) or to be used during particular on-grid conditions (e.g. grid peak demand, high electricity price) as an energy saving strategy. For the case of Data Centres, the Cryo-system leads to low PUE values around 1.15 thanks to the combined generation of cooling and power. In addition, the proposed Cryogenic energy system also has the potentiality to extension, synergies with other energy sources, and derivations to further use (thermal energy storage, fire suppression, etc.).

  • The proposed concept is particularly suitable for the case of Data Centres as it offers a combined generation of cooling and power. It is also convenient for other indoor environments such as refrigerated warehouses, factories, buildings and so on since it is proposed as a flexible technology that can operate under various configurations and control strategies. The Cryogenic energy system can serve as a Cryo-genset (backup power solution) and can also be used during particular on-grid conditions (e.g. grid peak demand, high electricity price) as an energy saving strategy.
